Housed in a building built in the Greek style Renaissance 1827, the center of the beautiful gardens of the Museum, Yorkshire Museum is one of the most modern museums in England. Yorkshire Museum is home to four permanent collections, covering areas such as biology, geology, archeology and astronomy.
It has had a major refurbishment in November 2009 to August 1, 2010, that involved major structural changes and redevelopment of all existing galleries.
The museum was founded by the Yorkshire Philosophical Society to host its geological and archaeological collections, and was originally housed in Ousegate, York, until the place became too small. In 1828, to build a new museum, the company received by royal grant, an area of ten acres of land which previously belonged to the Monastery of St. Mary.
