Established in 1712 in Greenwich, London and moved to the present location in 1933, The Royal Hospital School is training 700 students aged between 11 and 18 years, of which 500 are under the boarding. Located in the rural area of Ipswich town, 77 km from Stansted Airport, the school has a strong maritime heritage and that’s because it was originally established for the education of children from families with members involved in the marina.
Students 11 and 12 years are accommodated in two different houses, according to gender. Students older than 13 years are living in 11 houses, according to age and gender. Each student benefits from the assistance of a mentor, which is part of the house, gives help with any questions or concerns and involvement in extracurricular activities and social development. The campus covers an area of 80 hectares, with excellent facilities: center for arts, design and technology, international center, IT labs, library, music school worth 3.5 million pounds sports (adapted for all kinds of weather), golf course, swimming pool, squash court, gymnasium, fitness.
What makes The Royal Hospital School to differentiate itself from other schools is the Combined Cadet Force group, which is 10th in the country, also the national performance navigation and good performance at the Duke of Edinburgh Award. Extracurricular activities include various team sports (rugby, cricket, netball, hockey) and sailing, mountain biking, climbing, kayaking, canoeing, horseback riding. The arts play an important role in students’ development.
The school offers the opportunity to attend music school, to join the choir, school band, accompanying ceremonies and important national events, or other musical ensembles (orchestra, chamber choir group saxophone, jazz etc.). Other activities include drama and oratory arts, dance (classical ballet, pop, modern, traditional Spanish, Scottish), art and design (wood carvings, metal, plastic and clay, textile arts, photography).
Boarding school offers the program long term contact (less than a year) program in the short term boarding (from one quarter to one year), GCSE and A Levels. Students are educated not just to pass exams, but also to enjoy the adventure that involves learning and develop a thirst for cognition that will keep them for life. School graduates, usually follows prestigious UK universities: Oxford, Cambridge, Bristol, Durham, Edinburgh and other institutions in the Russell Group.
