Whenever the curry you telephone out for is 10 minutes late, save an idea for Sorley Boy MacDonnell, the Earl of Antrim, and his gang. On a stormy night in 1639 their kitchens in Dunluce Castle tumbled into the ocean, bringing seven cooks with them and abandoning just a kitchen kid sitting in an untouched corner.
Relinquished after the fall of the MacDonnells in 1690, the mansion gradually fell into deterioration. Today, the vacant, roofless rooms leave your creative energy allowed to meander as you envision that decisive night in 1639, or the one in 1588 when the Girona of the Spanish Armada was destroyed in a tempest on the stones adjacent. The ship’s gun were introduced in the gatehouses and whatever remains of the payload was sold to restore the castle.
The mansion is broadly thought to be the motivation for Cair Paravel in the Chronicles of Narnia by CS Lewis, who experienced childhood in Belfast, and in 1973, it showed up on the internal front of the Led Zeppelin collection Houses of the Holy.
